Exclusion device for cetaceans in beach seine fisheries

This solution is advanced by:

Bycatch of cetaceans remains a challenge in beach seine fisheries, where interactions can occur during hauling operations close to shore. While acoustic deterrent devices (pingers) can be effective to prevent bycatch, if the cetacean is caught in the beach seine, there is the need to find a solution to escape.

This solution aims to reduce cetacean bycatch by developing a bycatch reduction device (BRD) specifically adapted to beach seine gear and operational practices.

The challenge

Beach seine fisheries involve unique gear configurations and operational steps that can increase the risk of cetacean interactions, particularly during the final stages of hauling as the bag approaches the beach.

BRD must therefore be compatible with beach-based operations, affordable, and effective in enabling the safe release of animals.

The solution

This MarineGuardian solution focuses on the design of an exclusion device designed to:

  • Guide cetaceans out of the wing corridor
  • Enable their release as the bag approaches the beach

Development and progress

As this solution is yet to be developed, at the end of 2025, the features of the BRD are currently under discussion to evaluate how the design would best answer the challenges of this fishery.

Expected impact

The exclusion devices for beach seine fisheries are expected to contribute to:

  • Reduced cetacean bycatch
  • Lower mortality of cetaceans after bycatch
  • Improved coexistence between beach seine fisheries and cetaceans
